Cinequest 2016 film festival is in full bloom. Last week I was busy at Cinequest screening films with a few friends Swedish Lisa and Trisha the photographer. Oh you don’t know Trisha yet? I will introduce you to her next week on the blog. The film that stole my heart is called, My Feral Heart.
What is ‘My Feral Heart’ about?
Why did I fall in love with My Feral Heart?
Why did I fall in love with My Feral Heart? The story is well written and I believe most of you can relate. Not just because it is about a young man with downs but how some look at our disability and not our ability.
Last Tuesday, opening night of Cinequest I met the cast and crew at the after party. Everyone was so excited to be there! Wow, all the way from UK too so this is an international film.
After screening the film, I was hanging out at a coffee shop in San Jose with my blogger friend The Mama in Black and guess who walks in? The Director Jane Gull! Yes, it was a coincidence it was not planned. There was an empty seat next to me and I said, “Hey Jane, sit down for me for a few hours! I have tons of questions for you!” If you know me, I wasn’t kidding. That’s exactly what she did.
I am summarizing here but the conversation went something like this.
Wow.. What a cool story line. How did you find the script?
The story was brought to her and she jumped on it.
How did you cast the actors?
Jane wanted to cast someone who had down syndrome. She received a lot responses saying,”I have a friend/relative who has down syndrome.” Nope, wouldn’t do she wanted to be authentic. She went further to spot casting on the street. That is where she met the lead actor who portrays Luke, Steven Brandon. It turns out he was actually involved in a drama group. Good Job!!! A coincidence?
I followed up and asked her if the “residents” in the care facility were actors or actual residents. The residents were also actors in a drama group as well.
Did you have a big budget for the film?
The budget was large enough to pay everyone minimum wage. As a director she invested some of her own money in the film among other private investors. Her motive was if the director wasn’t financially interested then how can you get others on board? I believe very difficult.
My Feral Heart is playing today, March 8th 2016 at 4:30pm. You can grab your ticket here at Cinequest.
I know not every one of you lives in Silicon Valley. I heard they are headed to a film festival in Fargo. One idea is to follow along on their adventures.
Have you seen the film? Please let me know how you liked it.
*Remember last year at Cinequest? I sat down for coffee with Valerie Buhagair for a few hours too.
