It was a dark and stormy afternoon, my umbrella was barely surviving the winds of San Jose. I was on my way to a meeting when a stranger in a hooded sweatshirt approached and asked for directions. I pointed him in the right direction and then he wanted to chat. I had a few moments as we were walking the same way. He told me his name was Mike and was on disability for mental health reasons. Then he boldly asked, “Do you know Jesus?” I smiled because this was going to be good.
Yes, isn’t He great. I bet he wasn’t expecting that and maybe you weren’t either. I threw him off, but still kept chatting because I had an inkling Mike was going to tell me something I needed to hear. Right before we parted at the light, he said, “FAITH stands for Fantastic Adventures In Trusting Him.” And that was the something I needed to hear. It still puts a smile on my face.“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” Hebrews 11:1
Lately I have been going through the motions of life. A to B and B to C kind of days. I was so glad I stopped to chat with Mike for a few moments. A simple reminder life is a fantastic adventure. It doesn’t hurt to stop and talk to a stranger. Maybe if it was at night and I was alone AND.. NO. Like the photo (not taken here) , there are many people who suffer and feel mentally and emotionally torn. It is estimated 23 percent of Americans will experience a mental disorder in any given year, I am sure the percentages are higher in Silicon Valley. Unfortunately do to stigma only half will seek out help. If this is you or know someone who feels like that, there are local resources for help.
One local resource is the Mental Health Advocacy Project. Their mission is “to empower people identified as having mental or developmental disabilities to live more independent, secure and satisfying lives through the enforcement of their legal rights and the advancement of their social and economic well-being.”
