Cinequest 2017 you think is winding down? Nope not yet. Today, Saturday, March 11th all the action is happening and I love being apart of it! I have seen some great fabulous and funny films. Not all films can be a comedy but it’s great to laugh. As of today here is my top 6 films to see at Cinequest. I mention today because there are two days left of the film festival and I can’t wait to see the closing film ‘Zookeeper’s Wife’.
King of the Belgians
The queen hires a filmmaker to portray the king relatable and easy going. She makes sure this scripted documentary shows the best qualities from the monarch. While The King of the Belgians is on a state visit in Istanbul when his country falls apart. Oh no, he must return home as quickly as possible with his team and the filmmaker. There is no way to get home because a solar storm causes all communications to shut down. This is the start of many adventures leading him to finding and connecting with his true self. A fantastic comedy you don’t want to miss. Guess what you still can see it tomorrow, Sunday March 12th at the Hammer Theatre in San Jose at 3:45pm.
Quality problems? You know those problems where you find out your father in law is escaping house and reliving his wonder years (Alzheimer’s) and sh*t the cancer came back in your other boob. Man, those are problems but when your daughter is gearing up for her birthday party and and and and and.. all trying to stay sane and checking off your ‘to-do’ list. This film stars husband and wife team Doug and Brooke Purdy. Did I mention they directed it too? Oh those kids belong to them. It’s funny but at times grabs you by your emotions and runs. You are in luck Quality Problems plays today at CineArts Santana Row at 3:45pm and you can catch a showing tomorrow as well.
This is Meg
What you have to be on multiple social media channels? Twitter is not enough even for an up and coming actress? Yeah that one gal you just met, you know the one that plays guitar naked and sings. Oh wait not naked but stickers to cover her up so it’s allowed on that social media platform. Yes poor Meg she can’t just act she needs to promote herself and go to auditions and try to get her motivation back. When she wasn’t working as an actress she was a nanny for a rich gal with two kids. Hilarious, she worked there for a year and never met the kids. I guess only in LA. You get the point? A funny film from start to finish!
Get your booty out of bed because the last showing is today at 10:45AM in Redwood City!
Destiny (Xi He)
In a land far away in China a young mother, Lin has the same struggles as some of us. She has the same goals for her child as we do, a better education. Lin’s son Xi is autistic and she does everything in her power to ensure he is educated with other children of his age in a normal school. It becomes a horrible situation when the other parents team up against her and tell her that her son is not welcome in the school. Heartbreaking! It’s hard enough to be a parent but her love only shines for Xi as she tries to overcome this real struggle. Her husband tells her it’s okay they can have another child who will take care of Xi so he wouldn’t be a burden. She must face her own demons and upbringing to push through to the end.
I loved this film because it is real and I personally have friends that have children who are autistic and have suffered the same as Lin and Xi. This film will give you a perspective into the lives and how you can foster change in someones life and not be the other bullying parents but pushes you to look at your own attitudes and judgments.
You are in luck it is showing tomorrow at two different times and locations! GO SEE DESTINY (please)!
The Ottoman Empire, the Armenian genocide, a love triangle and the costumes are great! What happened? The Armenian genocide happened. This is not a historical fiction film and it is not alternative facts.
Tiffany and I had the pleasure to interview the producer Eric Ersailian. The Promise had only one showing on Thursday, March 9th at the California Theater. I hope you did not miss it.
Two things you don’t want to miss is our interview with producer Eric Ersailian and the film The Promise on April 21st!
