When you think of Tennessee a lot of names come into play. The most famous female in my book associated with Tennessee is Dolly Parton. You guessed it, the singer with the fancy wigs and still touring at the age of 70. Now isn’t that amazing? Wow, I know some 70 year olds that are out of shape let alone get them on a stage for a few hours.
Did you know that Dolly Parton has an amusement park called Dollywood? Prior to 1986 Dollywood was known as the Silver Dollar City. In 1986 she partnered with the Hershend Family and the name changed to Dollywood. Dollywood is located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. I like to call Pigeon Forge the mini Las Vegas it’s a place to stop and stay for awhile. One place to stay is the Dollywood Resort.
Why was Dollywood on my bucket list?
When visiting Tennessee there were a few things on my bucket list. To name a few Elvis and Dolly. Anything and everything associated with these folks were on my list. The hubby and the girls stayed home in Germany so I could really enjoy this trip instead of worrying about the kids. We are planning a family trip Summer 2018.
How to experience Dollywood.
- Plan to stay at Dollywood for more than a few hours. What does this mean? Don’t just rush in and out. Dollywood is an experience.
- Don’t schedule every moment of your day. There are so many activities happening that you want to see them all. The one exception, if you are visiting on a Sunday make sure you arrive early and start your day in the Chapel. The service begins at 11:30 every Sunday. Unfortunately I missed the church service.
I first walked around the park to soak in the atmosphere. Then I knew exactly where I wanted to begin, the tour bus.
First stop the tour bus.
Can you guess what I love about this tour bus? It says, “Dolly”. Have you ever seen these large tour buses driving down the interstate and wonder what famous celebrity it belongs to? No guessing here.

What to eat?
You need to experience some good Southern cooking right? My choice was Fried Green Tomatoes and I was not disappointed. My only wish was to have ordered a second serving.
What happens after you eat? You sit down and enjoy some good music. The Harvest Celebration Southern Gospel Celebration (September 30 – October 29) was happening while I was there muscians singing to the backdrop of the Great Smoky Mountains.
“It’s no secret I love singing about the beauty of God’s coloring book,” said Dolly Parton, “and viewing the bright fall colors of the Great Smoky Mountains on His pages is so very inspiring. When you mix in all of that great Southern gospel talent, including Sandi Patty, this truly is a great time of year to visit my Dollywood.”
Toward the end of the day, the sun was getting lower in the sky I strolled through Chasing Rainbows, Dolly’s museum. Loved seeing all her looks, her costumes and hearing her voice explaining a few things. It was truly my favourite part of the day, a little more connection with Dolly Parton.
Before walking out and continuing on my journey I stopped at The Dollywood Emporium and spent time finding the perfect souvenir. I chose a black t-shirt with a picture of Dolly Parton on it. Can’t wait to wear it.
Have you been to Dollywood? Is it also on your bucket list?
